An editorial on The Daily Show’s Ronny Chieng’s Everything is Stupid editorial on Adventure Playgrounds.

It’s official. We’ve reached a point in our culture and our helicopter parenting that our children are no longer Organic. Continue reading “Growing Urban Free-Range Kids” →

Why?

For the explorers and rainbow seekers who eagerly choose the path less taken. Driven to discover, connect, and grow. Taking “family travel” and merging it with “adventure travel”. Representing those whose stories we tend not to hear. Please read more in Why to learn the intention and uniqueness of this creation, and for opportunities in collaboration.

May the odds be ever in my favor. If I get it, I’ll take you with. 😉 I’m leaving town soon, taking only the essentials - namely a tent and a swimsuit. When I return, I hope I’ll be able to say I can use said tent in this area come summer........🤞🙏
Perhaps we need to move away from the concept of “self-esteem” towards the idea of “self-compassion”. Self-esteem is, at its roots, predicated on the foundation of feeling better-than or special, which all too easily leads to social comparison and narcissism. Instead, what if we practice more self-kindness, self-love, and self-care? We are not infallible. We all struggle. This is part of what it means to be human. Recognizing this, we can have compassion for ourselves both when we succeed AND when we fail. And from these experiences, it opens the door to learning and growing. With self-compassion, talk to yourself like you would to a good friend or loved one. Especially all the ladies out there - reality is, we struggle with this even more than our male counterparts. Let’s drop the whole self-esteem nonsense we’ve been fed for so many years, and ramp it up with more self-compassion. Studies show it leads to less fear of failure, enhanced motivation, healthy self-confidence, stronger relationships and better physical health. On this day, and every day hereafter, treat yourself with compassion. ❤️
Would you climb it?❄️⛏
I will admit to something....I enjoyed being stuck in a supermarket checkout line for over 45 minutes. I met and talked to so many neat people! Adversity, confinement, bewilderment, vulnerability - these are some universal connectors. So I decided to lean into it. First order of business was to pick the right aisle (line) to wait in. Frozen section? No, way too cold. Baking isle? Umm, prolly not a good idea (sugar + carbs 🤤). I picked the cereal and coffee aisle. It was fascinating. Sooo many people would stop there, and inevitably comment out loud “I can’t weather this storm without coffee!”, we’d share a laugh, they’d ask my opinion on which coffee to buy,.... All the while enjoying the conversation with the gentleman ahead of me and the young father behind me with a newborn baby swaddled to his chest. Finally arriving at the register, I exchanged even more pleasantries with the cashier who shared a funny story about his 4 older sisters. THIS is how community should feel. It’s a real treasure, and I’m grateful for such opportunities that remind me how much value this brings to life and humanity. ❤️
Snow days are good for dreaming and planning. One (of the many) dreams floating in my head ~ to hike the Wonderland Trail. Folks have told me “get a book”. Have you done this trail? Do you have a specific book recommendation for me? Who else wants to go?!? 🕺🏻
Here’s a story. And there’s a moral too ~ . On Sunday, I went snowshoeing in the quiet beauty of Mount Rainier with a friend. When I returned home, pumped, my kids asked me what I was on. “No, seriously, what drug did you take?” Me: “Mountains, baby! I’m high on mountains!” 🏔🌲❄️☀️🔥these are my drugs. . So then Tuesday rolls around, and we are graced with another snow day from school. As much as I love a good lounge-fest at home, the mountain itch starts to hit......it’s a Carpe Diem kind of day. “How do you rally a teenager from the couch on a snow day?!?” you ask? Well, pretty simple. It’s equal parts force (“nope, we’re going; get your shoes on”) and bribery. With food. Works. Every. Time. And guess what food promise got them to leave the ☀️of the lowlands to play in the magical mist of Rainier NP? ........ IHOP, my friends. IHOP. A place they’ve never been. Once I laid that offer on the table, it was go-time! . We had the park practically to ourselves. And it truly was magical. ✨With about 8 more inches of silky fresh pow, Paradise was ... well, Paradise. . And the moral? Keep the expectations low and “deprive” your kids. When they grow up with home cooked healthy meals and very limited screen time, it gives you some really cheap and easy cards to play. 😂 🕺🏻 . And if you’re wondering......they loved IHOP. My son said it would be a good place to bring a first date. Oh Lordy. What have I done?!?! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Maybe this was a parenting fail after all?? Well, I got my day in the mountains. So it’s a win as far as I’m concerned.....
